Senior Organization Design Lead

In a nutshell:

IDEO Shanghai is in search of a Senior Organization Design Lead / Organization Design Lead who has created and implemented organization solutions, either as a consultant or in-house within an organization.  This could include designing aspects of an organization such as: culture, roles, responsibilities, structures and rewards systems. This role will guide and inspire both teams and clients leveraging upon a deep understanding of people, internal systems, and the intricacies of change. You will work as a member of IDEO’s interdisciplinary design teams to help our clients achieve bold and meaningful change by testing and evolving strategies and solutions that build creative capabilities within an organization.

Why is this role important for IDEO’s work?

Senior Organization Design Leads make the biggest impact by helping our clients design  the internal conditions and drivers that enable innovation and transformation. As a relatively new position and function in IDEO Shanghai, senior candidates will have an opportunity to design and shape this role with us.  

Once here you will:

  • Build deep relationships and consult with client leadership teams, both Chinese and multinational on change and its implications to an organization
  • Work seamlessly with people who come from diverse backgrounds to tackle complex client challenges (including but not limited to Industrial Designers, Design Researchers, Business Designers, Interaction Designers and Environments Designers)
  • Get exposure to and involved with all aspects of the design consultancy approach, from research, inspiration gathering, brainstorm, strategy definition, concept development, prototyping, and more
  • Craft a research plan comprised of interviews and analogous inspiration to understand an organization’s working dynamics and surface opportunity areas and new ideas for change
  • Develop experimental approaches and tools for our clients to prototype new ways of working in their organization
  • Support and mentor junior design talent across the studio.
  • Connect IDEO with the larger global organizational design community and help shape IDEO’s perspective on org design

Relevant experience and mindset:

  • Deep Craft: successful candidates will bring a deep bench of experiences and skills in the art of organizational design, communication, and the innate ability to build trust and nurture impactful relationships with Chinese CEOs and leadership team members; you’ve not only designed for change – but have implemented this as well
  • Experience: you have 8+ years of working experience, ideally with previous leadership roles on client-side or change management consultancies, armed with a deep understanding of the complexities and challenges of implementing organizational change and transformation in China
  • Business & Strategy: you are a holistic, strategic thinker, always connecting the dots between people, business, organizations  - and how designing for internal conditions can create impact and value.
  • Leadership & Consultancy: you have more than 5 years of experience leading teams or projects, as well as being on client-facing and consultative roles for leadership teams from both Chinese and multinational organizations
  • Career Aspirations: You’re looking for a place that pushes on the edge of consultancy, strategic partnership and innovation – and what this means in terms of real world impact
  • Culture: you are comfortable working in an ambiguous and dynamic environment and comfortable with non- hierarchical organizations.
  • Language: you are fluent in both Mandarin and English.
