Senior Visual Communication Designer

Role summary:

We are seeking a visual communications designer to join our Shanghai studio. An individual with a solid knowledge in Graphic Design, Branding or Advertising looking to take the leap into a multi-disciplinary environment where teamwork is celebrated and no one design challenge ever fits comfortably into one specific design discipline.

We think you might be from a Graphic Design, Branding or Advertising agency background looking out the window wondering “where to go from here?”. You have been in the creative industry for 5-8 years and you’re looking for a place that will challenge your curiosity. The Design Chameleon: At IDEO, you will work on challenges that vary to different extremes and it’s essential that you’re able to showcase excellent agility and richness in your repertoire of visual expression. Finding the relevant tone and aesthetic sense that will resonate with very different audiences will make the difference between good work and great work.

The Fire-starter: IDEO is a place where we influence the public discourses of subject matters crucial to our mission and as designers, our soul needs feeding constantly to ensure we continue to produce work that transcends what good looks, feels and sounds like. So, as a member of the design community you have a equal responsibility to inspire us and others outside of IDEO about what excites you in the world of brand and visual communication.

The Puppet Master: Many of the projects you will be required to work on will involve multiple forms of media and touch-points. We are looking for someone with the ability to provide Creative Direction and pull the strings on complex design programs that involve multiple stakeholders, suppliers and creative teams. It’s not about doing it all yourself but it’s about conducting an orchestra.

The Bread ‘n Butter: You portfolio should show an excellent understanding of the craft of visual communication through strong art direction, solid graphic design and a passion for typography. Your work should equally showcase strong conceptual ideas together with your ability to communicate the strategies that has driven some of your work. You should be hungry to present your work in front of clients and teams and excited by working in a multi-disciplinary environment alongside Business Designers, Interaction Designers and Industrial Designers.

Some previous projects to check out:

  • Melon:  IDEO helped start-up Melon rebrand themselves and launch a successful kickstarter campaign to fund their breakthrough technology that enables people to measure their brain activity and track their mental focus.
  • Chicago Fire: While they’re Major League Soccer champions, Chicago’s a huge sports town, and competition for fans’ attention—and wallets—is fierce. The Fire was having trouble convincing new fans to come to its stadium. Wanting to capitalize on World Cup fever, the club asked IDEO to create memorable marketing campaigns and fan experiences to get more Chicagoans fired up and filling its seats.
  • Society of Grownups: Together with Mass Mutual we created a sort of master’s program for adulthood, where the curriculum covers everything from investing in a 401K to having that hard talk about a budget to how to pick good, cheap wine.  IDEO helped build the new venture from the ground up—designing a brand identity, a digital platform with some of the most sophisticated financial planning tools in the industry, and a hip brick-and-mortar locale.

Relevant experience:

The secret weapons we'd ideally like you to have are listed below. But if you don't tick all the boxes, which ones do you tick?

  • Brand identity: from understanding strategy to creative interpretation and execution; designing visual identities, defining brand architectures and building clear and useful guidelines for implementation.
  • Editorial design: working on books, magazines and printed publications.
  • Information graphics: Making sense of complex org charts, business flows and data.
  • Typography: a love and obsession for the finer details of type.
  • User interface and user experience design: working visual layouts for apps and sensitivity to how the digital medium works.
  • Motion graphics: experience in motion graphics would be a fantastic addition to our team.
  • Writing skills: the ability to articulate complex ideas and strategies in written form is an important part of what we do. And any experience in editing, scriptwriting and storyboarding would make you a very strong candidate.
  • Languages: we have a preference for bilingual designers with fluency in written and spoken English and Mandarin.
